Cassandra's Wall - Original Watercolor Collage

$515.00

Five hand-painted plates arranged on sage gingham: a cabbage leaf, a blue-and-white floral, wild strawberries, dogwood blossoms and a scalloped blue saucer. An original from the Bloom & Board collection.

Cassandra Austen was Jane’s older sister, her closest confidante, and a watercolorist in her own right. The only confirmed portrait of Jane is hers. Much of what we know about the Austen sisters’ days comes from the letters Jane wrote to her, full of visits, dinners and the small news of a household.

Cassandra’s Wall is a plate wall for an artist who loved those quiet domestic details. A cabbage leaf plate sits beside blue-and-white florals. A sage-rimmed plate holds a sprig of wild strawberries. A gilt-edged dinner plate is wreathed in dogwood, and a small scalloped saucer in periwinkle finishes the arrangement. They’re gathered on a ground of hand-painted gingham the way a well-loved collection comes together over years.

I painted each plate separately, cut it by hand and layered it onto the painted background. The pieces lift slightly from the surface and cast soft shadows, so they look like real china hung on a wall.

Bloom & Board

Original watercolor collages

A plate wall is never bought all at once. It comes together slowly: a dish handed down from a grandmother, a saucer found at a flea market, a plate you couldn’t leave behind on a trip. In time it becomes a portrait of a home and of the woman who kept it.

Bloom & Board is my collection of plate walls in watercolor. I paint each plate on its own, cut it out by hand and layer it onto a painted ground. Each one lifts slightly from the surface and casts its own shadow, the way real china does on a wall. The patterns come from both the garden and the table: cabbage leaves and wild strawberries, dogwood branches and blue-and-white florals.

Every wall is named for a storied woman, some real and some imagined, whose life unfolded in parlors, kitchens and gardens. Cassandra Austen painted in watercolor alongside her sister Jane. Lavinia Dickinson found Emily’s poems after her death and worked to see them published. Amy March, the youngest of the March sisters, was determined to become an artist. Elinor Dashwood held her family together with quiet good sense. Perdita, a princess raised by shepherds, hands out flowers at a sheep-shearing feast. Each of them, in her own way, kept beauty alive at home.

Each piece is an original and one of a kind.
